Matchmaking rating system
MMR stands for matchmaking rating and it’s a numerical point system that is the most accurate representation of your real position on the ranked ladder.
Your MMR is hidden behind your in-game rank and due to its nature, it is more accurate in terms of evaluating a player’s skill than visible ranked tier.
Unlike rank which is represented through LP, MMR is a stable number that assesses your skill level based on several factors. Most notably, this number takes into account your win rate paired with individual performance metrics and the skill level of the opponents.
How to know if my MMR is good or not?
The easiest and most accurate way of determining how good your League of Legends ranked MMR is by analyzing your LP gains and losses.
If you consistently gain more LP for wins than you lose for losses, your MMR is higher than the MMR of an average player in your current ranked tier. For this reason, the game naturally rewards you with a larger amount of LP, intending to push you into the next ranked tier.
On the other hand, if you lose more LP for defeats than you gain for wins, it’s a clear indicator that your MMR is lower than average for your ranked tier.
Another accurate way of determining your rank is to observe the quality of the opponents you face in ranked matches.
If you consistently play with and against players who are ranked much lower than you, it indicates that your MMR is closer to their rank rather than your current one.
How to fix MMR and increase my rank?
Play the meta champions
The best and most consistent way of improving your win rate, and therefore your rank and MMR, is by playing the most OP meta champions of the current patch.
Given that League of Legends ranked is never fully balanced, there are always certain champions that are overperforming and overpowering other champions in the meta. Almost every single patch has 3-5 champions that are the best picks in every lane on the Rift.
Naturally, you increase your likelihood of winning if you pick the champions who are statistically more likely to win League of Legends ranked matches.
The best way of keeping up with the League of Legends meta is by regularly reading patch notes and meta tier lists.
Start a new ranked journey
Sometimes, the MMR of some accounts can be doomed without repair, especially after a long streak of tilting losses.
In these instances, it’s often not worth wasting time trying to fix an account’s MMR as it’s very difficult and time-exhausting. The option most players take when their MMR is doomed is to create or purchase a ranked-ready smurf account with a fresh MMR.
This allows you to start a new ranked journey with untouched MMR as well as normalized LP gains and losses, resulting in an easier climb through League ranks.
Hire a coach
If you’re struggling to improve on your own, you shouldn’t hesitate to ask for help from experienced high elo players.
Nowadays, high elo players offer coaching services where they provide valuable advice on how you can improve as a League of Legends player. The most common method of coaching includes VOD reviews and live in-game coaching.
Both of these methods allow your coach to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses, identifying areas where you need to improve to progress in LoL ranks.
